Originally created in c. 1890, this carefully restored magnificent woodcut-artwork depicts an episode from the epic Ramayana where the ten-headed demon king Ravana is flying away with his quarry, Princess Sita, only to be stalled by the great vulture Jatayu, an ally to Sita’s husband Lord Rama. In the Bengali version of the Ramayana, Jatayu swallows Ravana’s chariot, but has to purge it out once he realises that Sita is aboard. The original artwork was created by Gobinda Chandra Roy renowned for his contributions to the Kalighat painting tradition.
